I wanted to focus on the front handspring, but actually spent lots of time trying the back handspring. After what were probably 30 bad attempts, I started understanding the movement and was able to do a few of them (always with the foam trainer, obviously).
It’s a really tricky and counter-intuitive movement for me, as I need to lean backward in a hollow position until I’m out of balance, and then spring backwards from there. Because the move resembles a backwards bridge, I kept trying to look up and back with my head, when you actually need to keep your chin tucked when you spring back. What helped me personally on my last few (better) attempts, was to have my arms next to my body and really swing them up and back. When I did that, while keeping my chin tucked, my toes on the floor and pushing my hips forward, my body tended to go in the right direction almost by itself, without consciously attempting a back bridge/handspring.
I guess this is one of those moves where all the judo training I did hinders my progress instead of helping, as I basically need to break all the rules and patterns I taught my body for so many years.
Other than this, I practised my handstand a little bit more. I managed to get a couple of freestanding ones for +5s. Yay! Talk about small victories :) (For some reason, doing the big stepping lunge and long arms approach really helps me getting my body lined up and straight).
Also did a few front and backflips on the trampoline. They are feeling more and more natural to me everyday, which is good news.
We also did a few lucha moves (Duane, Claire and I). We have springy floors and crash mats, so it’s the perfect place to practice that.
